Fully Battened Mainsails – what you need to know!

Posted on the February 10th, 2013

Fully battened mainsails are becoming increasingly more popular, from cruising to racing boats. There are several things to consider before buying a fully battened mainsail.

A fully battened mainsail offers considerably more power particularly in lighter conditions as the battens induce shape into the sail. The fully battened system is more suited to masthead rigs or yachts with very little angle on swept back spreader rigs. Sigma 33?s in particular are not that successful with a full batten due to the sail bending around the rigging when sailing downwind.

A few points to note when considering a fully battened system.

  • most fully battened sails need special batten cars – this can add to the price considerably
  • will your boom cover/stack-pack still fit with the increased sail volume and slide stack height
  • extra weight of the sail handling
  • storage of battens during the off season

In summary fully battened sails offer the cruising sailor huge benefits both in performance and ease of handling when used with a good batten car system and lazy jacks.
